The Gavrinis Cairn

A megalithic site nestling on the island of Gavrinis in Brittany, the Gavrinis cairn is nicknamed "the Sistine Chapel of the Neolithic". This exceptional monument is in the process of being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Accessible by boat from the port of Larmor Baden, the Gavrinis cairn was built between 4250 and 4000 BC. It was probably a monument dedicated to the cult of the dead. First excavated in 1835, it is considered to be one of the finest megalithic monuments in the world. Its special features include

• A set of engravings that is unique in the world: spirals, radiating circles, etc.
• A dolmen
• Remarkable dimensions: up to 7m high and 50m in diameter

As an added bonus, there are superb views over the islands of the Golfe du Morbihan and the double megalithic enclosure at Er Lannic.
